Our History

Edward Watts Opticians was established in 1958 by Edward (Ted) Watts at Toll Bar Cottage, 12 Chelmsford Road, Shenfield. Ted, a skilled and dedicated optician, quickly built a reputation for thorough eye care and genuine personal service.

In the early 1960s, the practice moved to its current premises at 14 Chelmsford Road, where it has remained ever since. The move allowed Ted to expand the practice and install an in-house laboratory for edging and fitting lenses — a facility we continue to operate today.

Over the decades, the practice has grown while retaining its founding values: careful, personalised attention, clinical excellence, and a commitment to treating every patient as an individual. Today, Edward Watts Opticians is led by a dedicated team of qualified professionals who carry forward Ted's vision.

As an independent practice, we are free to choose the best products and services for our patients without compromise. We invest in modern diagnostic technology, including OCT scanning, while maintaining the personal, unhurried approach that has defined us for over sixty years.

In-House Laboratory

Our on-site laboratory allows us to edge and fit lenses in-house, which means faster turnaround times and rigorous quality control. For most single-vision prescriptions, we can have your new glasses ready in a matter of days rather than weeks.

Comprehensive Lens Stock

We maintain a large stock of lenses at the practice, covering the vast majority of prescriptions. This means we can often begin work on your glasses immediately after your eye test, and many straightforward prescriptions can be fulfilled without delay.
